What is GSI Disability Insurance?
Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) is an individual disability insurance option that protects physicians from income loss due to a disability. These plans offer benefits equivalent to the top traditional disability insurance with one key difference — GSI has no medical underwriting review. In other words, pre-existing medical conditions won't disqualify you from obtaining full long-term disability benefits.
GSI disability insurance for University of Missouri residents and fellows includes various riders to customize protection. Benefits go as high as $15,000 monthly, and the coverage is portable, non-cancelable and guaranteed renewable.
The GSI disability insurance for University of Missouri, Columbia and Kansas City is available through Guardian.
Why Consider GSI Disability Insurance?
GSI disability insurance for University of Missouri residents and fellows can supplement other disability coverage or be a stand-alone solution. It's especially valuable in financial protection for those with health histories that could cause disability and impact earnings potential. Coverage helps provide financial security if an illness or injury occurs.
How GSI Differs From Other Disability Insurance Options
Most traditional individual disability insurance plans are fully underwritten, meaning approval depends on your health history, prescriptions, medical claims, and records.
GSI disability insurance is different — it requires no medical review, questions or exam. GSI is an individual policy, offering many of the same features such as true own-occupation, portability, future benefit increases without medical review, and guaranteed renewable protection. Coverage can increase up to a $15,000 monthly benefit.
Group disability insurance through employers may start on your hire date, but it has limitations: weaker definitions of disability, offsets for other benefits, and no portability if you change jobs. Relying solely on group coverage can leave gaps in protection.
When Should You Apply for GSI Insurance?
There is an eligibility requirement to be able to qualify for this GSI insurance policy:
This GSI offering is available to residents and fellows of University of Missouri who have not been declined or given a modified offer of individual disability insurance through a carrier other than Guardian.
The ideal time to apply for GSI is as soon as possible. The application window ends 90 days after the completion of your fellowship or residency. However, the above qualification requirement means it's ideal to obtain this coverage before considering applying for any other disability insurance coverage. If you receive an offer with modifications from any fully underwritten application, this GSI plan will no longer be available.
